Character origin and background
Ben Grimm was Reed Richards’ friend and the pilot on the spaceflight that changed the Fantastic Four. Cosmic rays transformed him into the Thing, giving him an orange, rock-like exterior, immense strength and exceptional durability.
The transformation made his heroic life inseparable from a difficult change in appearance. Humour, loyalty and a strong sense of community help define Ben beyond his strength, while his bonds with Reed, Sue and Johnny make him a cornerstone of Marvel’s First Family.
